One simple hack that changed my digestion.
Podcast show notes for Episode 8: One simple hack that changed my digestion.
Intro
First Part
I’m super curious to know how last week’s assignment went and if you were able to learn more about your digestive system. I’d love to chat about it with you over on Instagram @lovelydigest
As you can imagine, I had to make quite a few lifestyle changes when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s. I dove into several books on healing and wellness. I quite literally knew nothing about natural healing or how my body worked on a scientific level. I thought I did, but was blow away by all the nuances and overall smartness of my body. This opened my eyes to how little I respected what my body was doing for me on a daily basis and kickstarted my deeper appreciation of self and loving attitude towards my body. Without this, I don’t think I would’ve had the mindset to change my body at all.
Another thing I was blown away by is that holistic health and nutrition is so simple. From the ingredients and what’s needed to fuel our bodies to basic hydration, I didn’t need to spend millions to change the way I was living, and in fact, I noticed a huge reduction in my expenses when I started living more healthily.

Second Part
When I was younger I was constantly constipated, bloated and sluggish. I felt so lackluster and outwardly my skin reflected that. I didn’t drink enough water because I didn’t want to have to go to the bathroom during class. This is such a huge issue in schools today as your probably know!
One of the first things I learned about was proper hydration. That the quality of our water is SO important. If you live in the city or don’t have your own well, the town or city water systems are treated with Chlorine. Now being super sensitive and in tune with my body and what I’m eating, I can actually smell the chlorine when we’re filling up our Berkey water filter. It smells like pool water.
I chose to find a Berkey water filter online because Brita’s do not cut it. In fact their filters can actually add more contaminants and bacteria into the water you drink. While a Berkey is more of an investment, you don’t need to change the filters as often as the Brita at all (think like ten years compared to 6 months) and it filters lead. For someone with a chronic illness, especially one in the gut, this was a non-negotiable for living in a city.
I also learned that because the body is saline, and not pure water, it’s important to add salt to our water. And this is where it’s important to listen, NOT table salt. Celtic Sea Salt, the brand, doesn’t purify their salt, so it still has a grey, moist look and feel. This means there’s more nutrients intact to help make your water more bio-available to your cells and increase your hydration. This salt is available on Amazon and in the grocery store. I add ¼ teaspoon to my 40z, or one liter, hydroflask and drink 2.5-3 of these a day. It’s widely debated how much water you should drink, but in my opinion and expertise, 90-120oz depending on your bodyweight is a good starting point, or an ounce per pound of body weight.
Assignment
As you can probably guess, this week’s assignment is to practice proper hydration. Pick up some Celtic Sea salt and start adding a little to your water. When you’re first starting out, it’ll be a little salty so you’ll need to build up. Start with a pinch. I can’t even taste it in my water anymore, and it doesn’t taste like adding table salt to your water, it’s much more mild because it’s all natural.
Back in the day, farmers used to create this concoction called Switchel, or natural gatorade. I LOVE this when I’m working out. Add a ¼ teaspoon of celtic sea salt, a squeeze of lemon, a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar, and a ½ teaspoon of local honey to your water and shake it up. It tastes AMAZING. If you’re avoiding sugar like me, I just don’t add the honey.
