Have you ever stopped to think what the difference between primary and secondary symptoms and conditions are? I hadn’t either until I started doing research into my own wellbeing. It is hard to find a doctor in allopathic medicine that aims to treat the root cause, rather than symptoms. Pharmaceutical companies often offer doctors money in exchange for their referrals, leading to drug addiction and even more problems for the patient.
Although people with IBD often don’t know the cause or origin of their disease, it is important for each individual to step into their being by learning about the inner workings of their body and evaluate their lifestyle and diet choices. Without straightening out these, you’re guaranteed to not completely heal. Allopathic medicine is not made to cure you. It was originally made to assist with symptoms. Recently I’ve been doing a deep dive into functional medicine and why it isn’t at least incorporated or touched on when it’s known to help people. Turns out, it’s not even taught in America’s health system. I believe this is because of our tendency to rush towards the quick fix. The American consumer culture has leached into our healthcare system. We want to be fixed, and fast.
Allopathic drugs are not natural to our bodies. They’re made to squash symptoms. If you’re given oxycodone for a broken leg, is the oxycodone healing your leg? I will stop here to say I am not undermining the power of allopathic medicine. I am eternally grateful for my doctors and the times that modern medicine has indeed helped me. But until I was diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease, I didn’t know the ramifications that taking those drugs could have on my body.
An example of one of these drugs is birth control. Did you know that the hormones that birth control dumps into our bodies can predispose us to disease? Yes, birth control can increase inflammation levels in our bodies. We are raised in an environment where we are born into thinking that PMS is normal, that we can get pregnant at any time, and that we can suppress our emotions with, “hormone therapy.” What this is actually doing is removing us further from our ability to know our bodies. Again, I will stop to say that I am not telling you not to take birth control. I was put on it when I was 17 because a male doctor told me that I had, “women problems,” and, “cramps,” and he wanted to use it to rule out those symptoms so he could discount my abdominal, not even uterine, cramps. Turns out I had a hernia and a displaced nerve, but that’s another story. What I am trying to tell you is to start researching what you’re putting in your body. Your doctor isn’t told to take into account your personal Infradian Rhythm. Your doctor was told to prescribe for your needs. Learn your body and start to demand justice for women by demanding more long term testing on the effects of birth control.
Another example is pain killers. Raise your hand if you’ve ever been on one. Did it make you nervous? It should. I encourage you to read and listen to the articles I’ve listed below and don’t stop there! My point here is to make you mindful of what is going into your body. Yes, take care of yourself, but be mindful! Educate yourself on the industry you’re so ingrained in! Educate yourself to find out what you’re comfortable with. You don’t go and buy a car because someone tells you to buy a specific one without giving you the facts behind the car. Do your research on the drugs you’re taking and some alternatives to try with them. Learn why having root cause thinking is crucial for your care.
As I have become a part of the gastrointestinal medicine world, I have also been alarmed by the amount of side effects and damage done by doctors to their patients. Reading horror stories has sparked a flame to educate myself on my disease and how my own body works so I can take some control of my wellbeing. I do not want to be a passenger on my own journey!

I am by no means a professional. I simply want to share my own research behind the things I find myself facing!
