I have been extremely fortunate to have been asked to participate in a study focused on tracking pain and symptoms while going through a series of nutrition and mindfulness coaching appointments. Last week I was asked to wear a Biodot, basically a tiny mood ring, on my hand.
Essentially if your hands cool to a certain temperature the dot will turn a more amber or even black color. For warmer temps, it’ll be a more deep blue. In between is green. When our bodies begin to go into fight or flight, you may already know that our blood heads to the organs that needs it most, the heart and lungs. If there’s danger, we will use our heart and lungs to make our escape or fight off the attacker. Our digestive system slows and our extremities become cold. The same is true when you’re outside in extremely cold temperatures.
The body’s response to stress, labeled the Stress Response, works exactly the same. The Biodot comes in to measure how cold your hands are. Throughout the day I became hyper aware of how stressed I was and when I was stressed. Although a little anxiety inducing, it helped pinpoint where I need to be more careful about remembering to take deep, belly breaths versus shallow, chest breaths.
Overall I really loved how such a simple marker could help me identify when I was feeling uptight when I typically wouldn’t realize it on my own. It just goes to show how my health takes a backseat when I feel like I have a lot on my plate day to day.
