Working Remotely 101
Working remotely 101: Have you ever wondered how to be one of those glamorous travel bloggers who gets paid to lay on the beach? Same here, but I’ve found a way to get pretty close to that…
I love adventure. Traveling funnily enough gives me anxiety, but maybe I’m just addicted to the adrenaline rush because I can’t stop googling flights. Just this morning I thought I found $800 flights to New Zealand (my dream destination), but lo and behold… it was just for a one way. Still considering though 😉
Being able to work remotely has been such a blessing and has allowed me the flexibility to travel. Working around time zones isn’t so bad when you’re in a beautiful place.
How to travel while working remotely 101:
Find a job where you can work remotely.
A no brainer here. You’ll need to be able to travel light, so make sure any work you’ll need to do can be done on a laptop only. Unless you can splurge on some checked luggage. Although I wouldn’t recommend checking in laptops or important/expensive equipment.
Understand the time difference.
Make sure to move any meetings that might fall in the middle of the night. Unless you’re a night owl! But considering how much travel takes out of you, I recommend getting used to your new timezone and making the meeting a more realistic time of day for you if you can’t make the meeting an email.
Know that you’ll probably not be working as much as usual.
You’re in a new, wonderful place. You don’t want to be stuck inside all day and you’ll probably want to go explore. Finish some projects ahead of time and choose a few things that won’t take you the regular 8 hours to complete.
If you have clients, give them a heads up.
Things will slip through the cracks, wifi might not work, and flights will get delayed. Let your clients know by setting an away message and giving them a heads up that you’re on the go and will be checking your inbox less frequently.
Take time off.
Take a few full days off to just be in your new destination and not have any hard stops.
Schedule out to-dos a month in advance.
Shorten those project timelines where you can, schedule in time for a haircut/nails/etc., and remember that packing takes time. There’s always extra things to do before a trip and to be well rested, make sure you have enough daytime hours to do it all.
Make a packing list and check it thrice!
Make a separate packing list for your business things. Leave yourself a little note to grab chargers and adapters so you don’t forget anything you need to get work done!
Schedule out time to work.
Be diligent by scheduling time to be at your desk. Check the forecast and work on rainy days!
Be realistic with what you can do.
Again, and I can’t stress enough, things happen. You’re in a different “best you” mindset while traveling. At least I am. For my first trip out of the country since Crohn’s and COVID, I’m not planning to do any work unless it’s urgent or for my own business. That way I can allow a ton of room for that creativity to flow!
Check your destinations’ wifi.
You can’t work without wifi! 😉
I hope you enjoy! Let me know below if you have any questions.
