I am a snacker. I’ve always been a snacker. I’m the girl that will get up after a meal and ask, “What’s for dessert?” I’m always thinking about food and love to eat. So when I was diagnosed with Crohn’s, and what I could eat became a big fat question mark, I got super nervous about finding things to eat. It created a lot of fear around food, as maybe you can relate.
Now that I’m in more of a routine, I know what I like to avoid to stay healthy. I generally avoid processed foods, but there are some brands I love. I also want to chat about finding these foods on a budget, as many “healthier” snacking options are more expensive. Something I like to remember is that we’re all voting with our dollar, and the more I vote towards buying healthy snacks, the more those snacks will become mainstream and less expensive. Making them more accessible to everyone.
The first rule to finding a healthy snack is looking at ingredients. Obviously, whole foods and vegetables are the best first choice. In the morning I tend to snack on blueberries, apples, bananas, (can you tell I’m a former sugar addict?) and also cucumbers, baby carrots, and celery. When I go grocery shopping, I simply cut these up right away or buy them pre cut so I can chuck them in the fridge and have that to reach for when I’m on a quick break between meetings.
If you’re going to have processed foods, like I tend to have in the afternoon when I need more of a pick me up, just make sure to check your ingredients. Minimal (less than 5 ingredients but no more than 10) is ideal. Also make sure you can understand the ingredients. Those are the two best tips I ever got. There are of course snacks I love that have ingredients I don’t understand, but for the most part, I save those as treats or just don’t buy them in large quantities.
My favorite brands for healthy snacks are Simple Mills, Purely Elizabeth, Jovial Foods, Primal Kitchen for dressings and dips, One Degree Organics, Lundberg Organics, Bionaturae, Siete, and Good Health Inc. to name a few. I love to order them from Vitacost because they always have deals and I can usually get them for less than what I’d find at Whole Foods.
This week’s assignment is to go through your cabinet and make a few healthy swaps. Instead of buying more Doritos, opt for some avocado oil kettle chips or Siete flour tortilla chips with Late July salsa. I think you’ll find you’ll feel better and they might shock you with how good they taste. Until next week!
