- Crohn’s Disease Safe Holiday Recipe Ideas
- Intro
- First Part
- Happy holidays all! I cannot believe it’s already the end of December. I hope you all have a lovely holiday season and New Year wherever you are and whatever you celebrate. I’m still just on cloud 9 from our Europe trip and visiting France’s and Switzerland’s Christmas markets really just made this year so incredibly special.
- If you have a disability like Crohn’s Disease, the holidays can bring a lot of stress. My first holiday season with Crohn’s in 2020 was incredibly stressful. I still didn’t have a handle on my disease and couldn’t eat all my favorite things without getting sick. It was honestly awful. If you’ve been there or are going through that, just know it gets better and it’ll strengthen you.
- In 2021, my mom, my boyfriend and I had gotten into a grove with cooking meals that were spin-offs of my favorite dishes, and honestly they taste so much better my entire family just eats what I eat. Instead of using brown sugar, we use coconut sugar in the Christmas morning coffee cake and on top of the sweet potatoes.

- What I’ve found is most easy for finding Crohn’s safe recipes is to not find new recipes all together, but to simply switch out ingredients in your current recipes. Instead of using white and brown sugar, I just use coconut sugar. It has a very similar flavor to brown sugar and adds a lot to a recipe to spice it up. Speaking of spices, cinnamon is very anti-inflammatory, so consider adding that to your Christmas morning coffee and dishes.
- If you’ve been here awhile, you know I talk a lot about the importance of minding sugar intake. Even if you don’t have Crohn’s, sugar is very inflammatory. Eating it with a fat like avocado helps the body process sugar. I also like putting unfiltered (with lignans) flax oil into shakes or recipes with coconut sugar. On Christmas morning, instead of immediately diving into the coffee cake, my family will have an egg first to give the body a protein boost rather than dumping sugar on an empty stomach and causing an insulin spike.
- Three years into having Crohn’s, my boyfriend’s mom has also mastered Emily-friendly recipes and I could not be more grateful. Her love language is cooking so it makes us both so happy when I can try her creations! When I first got sick though, and my restrictions were changing day by day, I would bring my own meal or dish to contribute that I could eat.
- Dish ideas that both families love are green beans with garlic and olive oil, sweet potato casserole with pecans and coconut sugar on top, potatoes au-gratin (I can tolerate dairy now, but have also made it with coconut cream and it was amazing), turkey, chicken, and my favorite, the coffee cake with coconut sugar and cranberries (a combination of my mom’s and Mike’s mom’s recipes). I also have found organic stuffing on Thrive Market that, while more expensive, is amazing for holidays and doesn’t have added sugar.
- Assignment
- What is a dish that you could make for your family this holiday season? In my experience, people who thought my food would be bland were shocked at how much more flavorful it is with whole ingredients. While making things from scratch is definitely hard, so much more love goes into the whole process and can be such a fun bonding activity with family and friends. Happy holidays everyone – there won’t be an episode out next week, but I have some fun things scheduled for the New Year. Please make sure to subscribe to the podcast and leave a review. It helps me so much!
