Intro
Hello lovely people and welcome to the Lovely Digest podcast. I am your host and friend Emily, founder and creative director at BECK Creative, sharing weekly wellness wisdom with you every Wednesday. My goal is to help you design your dream life and make the transition from being in information overload to being your own personal success story. Make sure to subscribe to get notifications every time a new episode comes out so you don’t miss the latest simple and actionable tips for improving your wellbeing.
Part 1
Hello hello all and welcome to the first episode of The Lovely Digest podcast. My name is Emily as you heard in the Intro and I’m so excited to dive into so many amazing topics over the next few weeks.
My favorite form of communication is voice messages. I love sending them to my friends. I started on Youtube, but in the last year or so have been super drawn to podcasts because you can listen on the go. My hope is that here I can connect with a wider range of people and be a positive voice in your ear.
I was diagnosed with Crohn’s in March of 2020. I went on a trip to California that previous January and got food poisoning on the way home. Over the next month I rapidly declined and all foods were triggering me. I am 5’ 8” and ended up dropping to 108 pounds within a few weeks. I was going to the bathroom every few minutes and was in an incredible amount of pain – unable to sleep, eat, or focus on anything else. I am not sure how many weeks I was on the couch but I did not get off of it except to crawl to the bathroom.
Finally I got into a doctor who said I had severe Crohn’s after initially telling me it was my period. My inflammatory marker came back in the thousands. Luckily once I was stable on antibiotics, I was able to apply and get into the best Crohn’s doctor in Boston, and who is the Deputy Editor at the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. She recommended me to the STAAR program. A program promoting nutrition and meditation as important foundational pillars for health and healing. For a year I was able to heal without the help of biologic medication and got my footing. I joined the Institute of Integrative Nutrition, and started my marketing business, Beck Creative. I also launched The Lovely Digest and started my Youtube Channel.
In October 2021, I became very sick again. By this time I knew where all my ulcers were, and was much more in tune with my body. I surrendered to my inner self knowing I needed medication and couldn’t do it on my own anymore. I went in for a colonoscopy and ended up in the hospital for five days being monitored for a perfed colon. My gut lining was, “Paper thin,” as my doctor put it. It was confirmed I had severe ulceration where I had predicted, and that a portion of my intestine was dying. I am so grateful to have a doctor that immediately got me on Inflectra, worked with my insurance for me, and decided to see how I did before taking out that portion of my intestine. I trust her judgment completely, but am thankful for the opportunity to keep my intestines if possible and not have to go through an intense surgery.
A few days ago, I went in for a follow up colonoscopy. This time, I was feeling amazing. I knew I was in remission, and the colonoscopy proved that. Seeing the before and after images from October 2021 to now, less than a year later, I strongly believe that between the biologic medication, anti-anxiety and depression medication, and lifestyle changes, I was able to heal.
While this podcast will focus primarily on holistic remedies and practices, it is not a purely holistic podcast. Nor is it all about allopathic medication and supplements. I am not a doctor. I am, however, a strong believer in doing what is best for your individual body. I found a combination of allopathic and holistic that works for me. This podcast is about providing you with tools, as well as the know-how to tap into your intuition and research to choose your own path.
LTYG.com and discount code EBECK20
I’d like to take a pause in the episode to talk about this amazing opportunity to get 20% off Absorb Plus and the Listen to Your Gut Shop. If you have Crohn’s or chronic illness, you may have heard about LTYG. I reached out to the suppliers of Absorb Plus to see if I could give you guys 20% off rather than sign up for their affiliate program and the team at Listen to Your Gut graciously agreed. Absorb Plus quite literally saved my life and bought me time while I was waiting for my medication to get approved by insurance. It’s an elemental shake, meaning you can be on a completely liquid diet, gain weight, and get all the nutrients you need without needing the use of your intestines. Absorb Plus is digested completely before reaching the colon so it can have a break from working so hard. If you want to try it, use my code EBECK20 for 20% off on ListentoYourGut.com. This is an offer not available anywhere else.
Part 2: What to expect
When I was diagnosed, I went back to school for my health coaching certification. However, I didn’t go to become a health coach, I went to learn for myself. This podcast is for anyone looking to learn more about ways to support their health and wellbeing, but don’t want to become a health coach and have to pay the price of a full health coaching program. This is also a resource for friends and family of those impacted by chronic illness, or for those just wanting to be proactive and upgrade their wellbeing.
It’s important to remember, today is the first day of the rest of your life. It’s also important to remember if we do end up sick, not to beat ourselves up. It’s more important to have compassion for your body and take small, actionable steps to being the healthiest version of you.
This podcast isn’t:
A cure to any disease, illness or condition
Going to push you to do things that don’t align like specific diets or medications; I am not a doctor
A quick fix of any kind
This podcast is:
A companion to supporting your health and wellbeing
An actionable guide to implement into your current lifestyle
My role is to:
support you
Share my story and others
Give you actionable and budget friendly tips
Your role is to:
To show up for yourself and follow what feels aligned with you and leave what doesn’t
Choose where to invest more time and money if something resonates with you
Integration into Daily Life
This podcast comes out once a week, on Wednesdays.
I will give an “assignment” at the end of each episode.
Pick this assignment or another tip you heard that you want to implement into your life and break it down into actionable steps over the next week. If it’s a new habit, like drinking water throughout the day, write it into your schedule. Don’t give up! If you miss a day jump right back into it. Repetition is key!
Remember you deserve good health. You deserve self love. You deserve a life you love.
Assignment
I’d really like you to take a few moments to close your eyes. If you’re driving, keep them open, but just listen. Relax your body. Feel your feet relax, soles on the floor, relax your calves, thighs, hips, bum, belly, lower back, upper back, chest, shoulders, neck, biceps, forearms, and hands. Feel the space around your belly. Now be aware of the space within your belly. Between your organs. Take a deep breath into your belly, pushing it out as far as you can. Hold. Now release slowly, one, two, three, four, five, six. And if you can, suck your belly in and push that remaining air out. You can breathe normally now. Become aware of your surroundings and noises in the space around you, and when you’re ready, slowly open your eyes. The first step to choosing what is best for you, is reconnecting with yourself. Our intuition is usually the first thought before fear, shame, or judgment comes in. I’d like you to do this exercise once a day this week. Pick a time and add it to your calendar and I’ll see you next week.
