Holistic health, as I’ve mentioned in an earlier blog, is about taking a full picture approach to healing in an effort to locate the root cause of symptoms, rather than just treating symptoms. So what encompasses holistic wellbeing? While working with a health coach is the best way to have accountability and make sustainable changes in life, here are some main areas to look into when revamping your health and wellbeing:
Career
If we work 40 hour weeks on average, that’s almost 40% of our waking hours during the day (if we get 8 hours of sleep). If we’re spending 40% of our lives doing something we dislike, how can you expect your body and mindset to be clear and well functioning?
Relationships
The people we surround ourselves with directly impact how we act, think, and feel. Can you afford to be friends or even partners with someone who doesn’t light you up?
Home
The theme here seems to be – if you spend a lot of time around, in, or near certain things you have to make sure they’re the healthiest and best for you… same goes for your home environment! Make sure you’re regularly cleaning out the old and organizing the new. It’ll clear the energy in the space and allow new experiences in alignment with you to flow in!
Nutrition
Your digestive system is your internal skin and like the skin on the outside, can be sensitive. If you have a sunburn, do you go back out into the sun the next day? Likewise, eat processed and inflammatory foods in moderation and be mindful of contaminants in your food and water.
Social Life
Even if you’re an introvert, spending quality time with others is crucial to human survival. It’s in our DNA to be part of a tribe. Take time to cultivate your relationships and help others in your community.
Spirituality
Connection to something greater than yourself, whether it be God or the ocean, is so important to ground the body and mind. Our brains aren’t build to be bombarded with as much information as we are. Stop to meditate or just be present for awhile.
Movement
Moving our bodies clears stagnant energy and keeps the blood moving throughout the body, promoting healing. Even gentle yoga for 10 minutes a day can help relieve symptoms – doing yoga in the sun when I was very sick helped my body put on weight and build strength slowly, even though I had to lay down after each movement.
Take time to evaluate and check in with each area. Write down action steps for each and place it in an area where you will see it everyday. Make an appointment with yourself to review progress and set new goals each month! Remember – tiny steps are better than none, soon you’ll be on your way to changing your whole life!
