By reframing anxiety, we can learn to be at peace with our emotions and walk through them instead of fighting them.
Grabbing a journal and doing a stream of consciousness releases all those anxiety induced thoughts on to the page and out of your system. I find that doing this helps me to relax and visualize what I need to do. Oftentimes many of the things that I thought were crucial to get done can be scheduled into my calendar for me to be reminded about later. This always frees up space in my brain and allows me to focus on the task at hand rather than stopping and starting every two minutes to write something else down or to catch myself lost in thought. I find that if I wake up extremely anxious and just try to jump straight into my day without sorting through those thoughts my day ends up being a lot more unproductive and I remember it as being a bad, anxious day.
If you’re still feeling a bit anxious even if all of your thoughts stop running through your head, focus on some thing that is grounding you, like where your feet are placed, a mindless task that you might be doing, for instance I work at a barn and I will hyper focus on cleaning out water buckets for the horses. Doing a mindless task and focusing on it can really help ground the mind and bring it into the present moment.
Sometimes if I’m still anxious after this, I reframe it in a positive way. Change in life is synonymous with anxiety, humans crave routine, so any change outside of the boundaries of what you are used to is going to throw off your system for a little while. Therefore I like to see anxiety as a promise that I am moving forward. Reframing my outlook makes me more enthusiastic and open to my feelings rather than pushing them away or viewing them as a burden. Feel your feelings! Positivity isn’t always the answer, but reframing to accept anxiety is the key to a positive life!
