Listen to the PODCAST
Hello everyone and welcome back to another episode of the podcast. In honor of Valentine’s Day and the month of love and self care, I wanted to share a bit about how I take care of myself in a budget friendly, wholesome way with an At Home Spa Day DIY version. I’m sure we’re all familiar with the concept of “THE shower.” Where you shave, exfoliate, wash your hair, maybe do a hair mask, etc. This is my next level of that. So if I do that every other week or so, I try to at least do this once a month.
I really like to do this to reconnect to myself, honor my body and check in with my needs. While I’m not someone who feels they need to get ready every day to be a productive human, I can literally roll out of bed and feel good to go, I do like to feel at home in body and clean and like the best version of myself. Taking some time to do my nails, a hair mask, at home facial are all ways that I show my body gratitude for being my home. This is something that’s become even more important to me since getting diagnosed with Crohn’s Disease. Before Crohn’s, I treated my body like a machine that occasionally needed to be fixed at the doctor when I got sick. I didn’t understand my body’s warning signs that I was feeling run down and needed rest and relaxation. So, without further ado, this is my process for making sure I don’t get burnt out and maintain my wellbeing.
When having a self care spa day I love to do a variety of things. I recently got an organic at home gel nails kit that doesn’t ruin my nails and I LOVE doing this to make myself feel extra polished and glam. Going to a barn a few times a week doesn’t exactly go well with regular nail polish, but if you work from home like I do the rest of the time, painting your nails can be a great way to feel a little more glam and feminine.
I’ve recently started getting facials to heal my acne, but before going to my facialist, at home facials were my go to every weekend when I wanted to feel pampered without breaking the bank. There’s this laxative that comes in a tea form called Swiss-Kriss, and it’s amazing for steaming your face. My mom and grandma showed me how to do this and it’s so rejuvenating and makes my skin glow. I simply boil water and add about a tablespoon of Swiss-Kriss to it and then throw a towel over my head and steam for a few minutes until the sweat drips down my face. I then wash with some cool water and do my skincare.
Dry brushing has become a daily habit of mine. I love dry brushing before my shower to get the blood flowing. I’ve shared on Instagram lately that I’ve been struggling with hives and dry brushing really helps move the blood and circulate the lymph relieving some of the itchiness and pain with the rashes!
Another spa day favorite of mine is not only doing THE shower, but adding in self tanner. I do this occasionally, but in the winter I find that being a little more tan makes me feel more healthy when I look at myself in the mirror. This has definitely more of a mental rather than physical benefit, but being so pale, having a little color makes me feel better.
Lastly, I love giving myself a little at home pedicure, even if I’m not painting my nails. I file down my calluses and apply some organic oils and lotions and put on socks so that it can fully sink in. When my feet feel better, my entire body is more relaxed and I love it.
Assignment
As can be expected, today’s assignment is to have your own self care spa day and to head to the @lovelydigest on Instagram and comment on my latest post about what your favorite form of self care is so others can discover some great new ways of taking care of ourselves!
