I’ve noticed lately that I have a hard time staying grounded. This is only something I’ve been able to discern since getting Crohn’s Disease, and I think that’s because I’ve become more in tune with my body. But lately I’ve been feeling dizzy, all over the place, chaotic, and like my head is in the clouds – meaning I have a lot of brain fog and have this general feeling that something is off. I think it’s something to do with traveling and not maintaining my typical diet and routine as well.
I went to the doctor and all my bloodwork is looking good and I’m not in pain, so I’ve been learning about how to ground and ways to bring myself down to earth and honor this phase of life, despite it being a bit aggravating.
I started taking notes on how I’m feeling and noting when the feeling intensifies. It’s usually after I have sugar, start out my day with a sugary breakfast rather than a more heavy one, if I don’t workout, and if I don’t meditate. When I did all of those things, I felt more at peace, so I wanted to share a few resources on how to ground within your own life.
1. If it’s a sunny day, go out and look (not at lol), towards, the sun. This will help wake up your body and gives me a much needed boost of energy. While I love coffee, I find even decaf gives me a buzz of anxiety and contributes to my “head in the clouds” feeling.
2. Start your day with a grounding breakfast. Think eggs, mushrooms, or even your leftovers from dinner. I have such a sweet tooth and typically go for sweet oats, a protein shake, or make pancakes, but I find that consuming sugar off the bat, even healthy sugars, contributes to my anxiety. You better believe I’ll be having sugary breakfasts on weekends and vacations when I’m less likely to be anxious, but during the week I try to stick to grounding foods.
3. Take a probiotic – your gut is your second brain and contributes greatly to your emotions. A lot of anxiety stems from an unbalanced gut.
4. Meditate – I know you knew this was coming, but meditation, even five minutes a day, solves so many problems. I personally love To Be Magnetic and have been using it for over 3 years. You can use my code in the show notes below to get 15% off.
5. Do a light workout. I find cardio and HIIT make my anxiety worse, so I opt for a low impact workout like yoga, pilates, swimming, or weightlifting. Or dance around at home. Like I mentioned in the previous episode, dancing can help move the energy out of your body.
6. Do a sauna/cold plunge combination. If your gym has a sauna, USE IT. It has so many health benefits it needs its own podcast. If you don’t have access to a cold plunge, take a cold shower. Even 10 minutes works wonders for your body.
7. Check in with your doctor if none of these help your feelings – even if you don’t understand what’s happening, it doesn’t make it any less real or important.
Your assignment this week is to pick a tip and incorporate it into your schedule and note how it impacts your peace and energy. I would love to know if you got any good ideas and if you incorporate any into your life! Send me a message on Instagram @lovelydigest See you next week!
