Maintaining Good Health While Traveling Show Notes
Maintaining Good Health While Traveling
Intro
First Part
While you’re listening to this episode, Mike and I are currently packing for our trip to Europe tomorrow. In June I was talking to my Grandpa and he told me all about his travels to visit family in Strasbourg France. My family dug out the ancestry books documenting the lives of our relatives and great-grandparents and found out both my grandmother’s and grandfather’s ancestors on my dad’s side are from the Alsace-Lorraine region in France. Pre-pandemic, in March of 2020, Mike and I had a trip booked to do a road trip from London to Scotland, but obviously we had to cancel that. We found out that next year we have two weddings in England so we didn’t want to just reschedule the same trip, but we knew we wanted to have a trip just for us two to celebrate me being in remission and able to travel and to share our love of travel together. When my grandpa was telling his story of his own travel stories while stationed in Bar-Le-Duc France in the army and visiting his relatives, Mike suggested we head there. So six months later and here we are… finally getting on a plane together for the first time! Fun fact about me, rather than planning my future wedding I would plan imaginary vacations and trip with my future husband… so this is super exciting for me!
As you all know, I have Crohn’s. And I’m on a biologic to suppress my overactive immune system. So maintaining good health is very important to me while traveling. I wanted to share these tips with you because I feel now more than ever people all over with and without immunocompromising hidden disabilities are looking for ways to boost their immune system and stay healthy and safe while traveling.
My credentials for this information include not only my health coaching certification, but the fact that I went to Germany in May and came back with covid, but didn’t have a single symptom. This is mostly a joke, but I do think that’s because of my pre-travel protocol!

Second Part
My travel plans begin about a month before take-off. Six months ahead, when I’m booking flights and accommodations, I create a rough outline of things I want to accomplish before we go. 2-3 months ahead when I’m booking transportation, I also start booking any health treatments ahead of time to make sure I can get in when I need to.
The more your nervous system is relaxed, the better your immune system can take care of you. This is the same for nutrition. If you’re eating a lot of sugar and junk in the month before you go, your immune system is going to be depleted. The odds that you’ll get sick are much higher. So I like to plan my meals for the week before and include gut healing soups with bone broth and make a few of my own wellness tonics with citrus juice and ginger. If you don’t have a juicer, make a lot of warm water with lemon and ginger and have a cup every morning before you eat breakfast.
Health treatments that help relax the nervous system are massage, chiropractics, and sauna-ing. I like to schedule a tune up for each in the week before leaving. I personally do deep tissue massage, so I schedule this a few days before and make sure to drink plenty of water and go in the sauna over the next few days to sweat out all the toxins that have been released.
In Providence and Newport Rhode Island, there’s the Bodhi Spa, which offers a treatment called the water journey. For two hours you get access to a series of pools, saunas and steam to move through to relax your nervous system and detox. I did this on Monday and holy cow, it felt like I was on drugs I was so relaxed.
Now for in flight tips. I love bringing Beekeeper’s Naturals Propolis throat spray. Every single time I’ve felt like I was getting a cold I would use this once a day and I wouldn’t get sick. I use this once a day while traveling and afterwards.
While masks are no longer mandatory on flights and covid tests aren’t necessary for re-entry in the US, I still like to practice both as a precaution. Because Mike and I are traveling around Christmas we want to be sure to be able to be with our families, so we scheduled covid tests for a few days after we get back just to be sure and are bringing N95 masks for the planes. While I am a big believer in natural exposure to promote good immune system strength, the planes’ new systems of keeping the air sanitized make the air even more drying than ever and being in such a small enclosed space with a lot of people isn’t natural, so I just wear it in flight or in crowded spaces. Add a dab of Aquaphor to your nostrils and eyes to stay hydrated.
Assignment
Your assignment today is to think about any upcoming trips and take time to make a pre-travel protocol for yourself. Plan out wholesome meals the week before you go. Schedule in time to pack and go out on last minute errands. Clean your home so you’re not scrambling to fit things in last minute. What activities help relax you – add those into your schedule as well, and plan to fit some relax time in on your trip to stay grounded! I know I get easily swept up in the excitement and abandon my usual routine like meditating and hydrating enough, so just make sure to leave a few quick minutes to connect back to your body at the end of the day and drink lots of water!
